Remodeling Our New Home
Despite all my years I still feel like a child within. I have a difficult time looking in the mirror and seeing a fully realized mature man. I would have considered the birth of my second child would have altered it, yet I still appear to be in self-denial of the aging process.
And regarding aging — or rather putting it off — my dear wife and I recently bought a new home and this house has enough room in its basement for the home gym my wife had always wanted. Of course, I’m seeing dollar signs when I brainstorm all the diverse things needed, from the required but oft-forgotten benches for weight-lifting and exercise mats to selecting the most reliable stationary bicycle. Exercise bikes can be tricky these days. Do you buy an upright or a recumbent bicycle? Should I select an analog or electronic?
My wife seems determined to get an elliptical trainer too. Yes you understood that accurately. A stationary bike and an elliptical machine — not only one or the other. My guess is that the extra exercise equipment will go with the cream for stretch marks she started using after the birth of youngest child. Wow I’ll get it for that jest.
I have to be careful with the budget because our new house is a bit more of a diamond in the rough. We required it to be this way, but we still have to carefully budget every little thing, even to a knob for a cabinet (I’m not jesting). My dear wife has an ambitious cabinet refacing project planned, but I have to remind her the bathroom sink she wishes put in will cost a fair amount, too.
Thankfully, we both appreciate the rustic, natural style, so we’re furnishing our new house with unfinished furnitures. Yes, it still requires a little polishing off, but she and I can keep the costs down and make better furniture than we could purchase in any store. I recently came across a nice table for coffee with some decent, natural knotting and a entryway table in matching oak.
And then there’s the great outdoors. For our outdoor patio we’re researching an outdoor fireplace and we will furnish with a little budget wicker furniture initially.
Providing for a brand new home may appear so adult, but I cannot help but sense I’m just playing house. The new furniture and exercise equipment only feel like a new era of toys.
